An open-ended camp for the right to housing

Day 20 in Plaça Catalunya

People organising to look after each other. Open, assembly-based and non-violent. We occupy the square because housing has become a business, and we have become the merchandise.

Si no hi podem viure, hi acampem. L'habitatge és un dret, no un privilegi.

Manifesto

Who we are

We are not a party or a union. We are people: neighbours, workers, students, elders, newcomers, people who sleep on the street. We met in the square because housing has become a business, and we have become the merchandise.

A home is where a life project begins, where a family is formed, where you rest so you can start again. Without a home, none of that exists.

That's why we camp: to look after each other, to open the square to those the system has left out, and to show that another way of living is possible. Horizontal, self-managed, by assembly. Part of a global, decentralised movement for a more human, fair and sustainable world.

Everyone who comes with respect and good faith is welcome. We are an army of hearts. And this is only the beginning.

Why we camp

Olga, Javier, Maricarmen

Three people dead in one month in connection with evictions. We remember them so there isn't a single one more.

Stop evictions

Facing eviction?

Don't face it alone. In the square we organise to stop evictions: every eviction stopped is a collective victory.

  1. Come to the info point and ask for the social services commission.
  2. Bring whatever documents you have: contract, notices, the eviction date.
  3. Tell people in your neighbourhood. The more of us at the door, the harder it is to throw us out.

If you feel there is no way out, call 024 (Spain): the free 24-hour suicide prevention line. In an emergency, 112.

General strike for housing

The camp doesn't end at the square. The housing movement is organising across Spain towards a general strike on 11 November. A strike isn't declared: it's built, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, workplace by workplace, classroom by classroom.

Questions

Questions

Who organises the camp?

No one owns it. We are not a party or a union: we are people who decide in an open assembly and work in commissions.

Can I come if I have nowhere to sleep?

Yes. Stop by the info point: the social services commission will listen and point you to available resources.

Are there activities for children and families?

Yes. Every day there is a programme for all ages. Ask at the information point.

How can I help if I can't come?

Ask at the information point what we need and bring it, or share the radio. You can also offer your skills: translation, health, law, repairs.

How are decisions made?

In an open assembly, by consensus. The roles of facilitation, speaking turns, minutes and care rotate. Commissions carry out what is agreed.
